Unable to cope, the mind loses hope…
Another mindless act of the mind: another suffering human
goes on a rampage and killing spree, stabbing his room-mates and then shooting
others, causing suffering all around. All in the name of being neglected,
bullied or just plain lonely is hard to say. But, the recent incident in Santa Barbara,
USA, brings to the fore the warped psyche of youngsters or long ignored issues
that society seems to be facing and has been unable to resolve.
What is it that seems to be going so wrong to trigger
off events that do not seem to have any logical explanation? What is it that
seems to be missing in the seemingly secure, reasonably opulent and
materialistically well-endowed lives of young people today? Is it all about the liberal gun laws or is
there a huge gap in the lives of children as a whole as they are perhaps
shunted from one failed relationship to another, or is it about having been
there, done that, a little too soon?
These have ceased to be freak cases and seem to be
becoming the norm, but what is more alarming is the fact that in spite awareness,
availability of all kind of checks and balances and access to psychological and
psychiatric expertise, there loom in the shadows of a seemingly normal life, dehumanized,
disillusioned lonely souls, unable to cope. The lack of an immediate family or
extended family compounds the problem further. Also perhaps the need for
privacy and in a highly individualized set-up, most children and young adults
seem to lead lives that are islands, cut off from reality.
The cry for help perhaps emanates in different ways,
but is not intercepted or interpreted on time. The build-up is scary and borders
on the bizarre and dangerous. To take a leaf out of the recent incident the
frantic trip by the parents from different directions, as they were separated,
after receiving their son’s email, to make a last ditch effort to salvage the
situation was a tad too late in the day. The damage had already been done by
then. Not that they are to blame entirely for what panned out, but what is it
in society, that has unleashed this level of pathos?
One wonders could
these be perhaps manifestations of unresolved intricacies of our layered mind,
the labyrinthine mesh that entraps moments as a mellifluous melody or has
jagged shards sticking out of the brain tissue as it were, creating hallucinations
and repercussions far beyond our control. Whatever it is, it needs immediate attention
so that more innocent lives are not snuffed out for no reason…
